A COVID-19 vaccine could be produced in record time, but that still won't be fast enough to to solve our current pandemic. What could: treatments. Developers all over the world are working on repurposing old drugs and creating new ones to treat COVID-19, and some could be ready by April this year. The reason treatments might be available so much sooner than a vaccine has to do with safety. We spoke with a couple researchers - one developing a treatment and one developing a vaccine - about their timelines. Why Bats Can Fight Off So Many Viruses
Why Bats Can Fight Off So Many Viruses

Scientists believe the COVID-19 coronavirus may have originated in bats, and it's not just because of the similarities between COVID-19 and SARS. Many animals are capable of transmitting viruses to humans, but bats take it to another level. They are known as virus super hosts. A by-product to flying, bats weakened immune systems have given them the ability to live with viruses without displaying serious symptoms. But it’s not the bats' fault, humans are encroaching on wild environments increasing the chances of wildlife directly interacting with people and domesticated animals. The COVID-19 coronavirus is a respiratory virus, which means it can invade your respiratory system, affecting how you breathe in oxygen and get it to your bloodstream. Where the virus targets can explain why certain conditions are especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 coronavirus. Conditions like diabetes, asthma, COPD, and cancers have higher risk factors, and the COVID-19 coronavirus affects each one in different ways. The Coronavirus is spreading rapidly around the world. According to the CDC, the virus is spread primarily through "person-to-person" contact. But experts say touching contaminated surfaces can still pose a risk. If someone coughs or sneezes on their hand and then touches a doorknob or a faucet the virus could survive for up to 72 hours, according to the study. It's important to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your face and use disinfecting wipes to clean frequently used surfaces like doorknobs and your phone. The Mariana Trench is the deepest point on Earth, void of light with the pressure of 48 jumbo jets. Yet life finds a way to survive. Very weird life. The coronavirus, now known as COVID-19, originated in Wuhan, China, and has spread to at least 26 other countries. Syra Madad, the senior director of the NYC Health + Hospitals System-wide Special Pathogens Program, and Stephen Morse, a professor of epidemiology at Columbia University, debunked 13 of the most common myths about the coronavirus. They explained how packages from China won't make you sick and that getting COVID-19 is not a death sentence. They also debunked the idea that it affects only older people - anyone can get the coronavirus. Update: The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends that if you must go out, wear a cloth or fabric face mask. The change in recommendation comes as emerging evidence suggests people can transmit the coronavirus to others before they even know they’ve been infected. The CDC also recommends that those suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19 should restrict contact with pets or other animals. The change in recommendation comes as a small number of pets outside of the US have been reported to be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 after close contact with people with COVID-19. But there is no current evidence that pets can spread COVID-19 to people or other animals. Although there are many bald celebrity icons like The Rock, Jeff Bezos, the Dalai Lama, and Shaquille O'Neal, losing your hair is not something men aspire to. We asked a dermatologist to explain the scientific reasons that some men lose their hair. Dr. Jennifer Chwalek is a Board Certified dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York. Chwalek explained that hair loss is not directly related to low levels of testosterone. Going bald is largely determined by genetics, and how sensitive a person's hair follicles are to a byproduct of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone. If Santa really delivered presents on Christmas Eve, he’d need to fly over a thousand times faster than the world’s faster jet fighter to visit about 240 million homes. From useless wisdom teeth to painful spines, the human body is filled with evidence that evolution is not always kind or helpful. For example, our bony, flexible feet -which originally evolved to help cling to branches- can lead to common, frequent foot injuries today. The Surprising Origin Of A Color Darker Than Vantablack

The darkest color in the world was unveiled earlier this year. It’s the result of a first-of-its-kind collaboration between art and science. In September, 2019, scientists at MIT unveiled the "blackest black" material to date, which was made using carbon nanotubes. That's the same material used to make Vantablack, which was once considered the world's darkest material. Although it was created by scientists, it was conceived by an artist named Diemut Strebe for a project called the Redemption of Vanity. Strebe had the scientists coat a diamond worth an estimated $2 million with the new material, which has yet to be named, as a statement on how value is attached to objects and concepts. The Great Barrier Reef is at a critical tipping point that will determine its long-term survival. On August 30, an Australian government report downgraded the reef’s future outlook from “poor” to “very poor.” Coral reefs provide a home for 25% of all marine life, are an incredible natural resource for breakthrough medicines, and half a billion people depend on them for food and work. The health of the reef is also a barometer for the whole planet, meaning if the Great Barrier Reef dies, it’s a surefire sign other ecosystems are next. Experts say the time to take action is now, and if nothing is done, this world wonder as we know it today could be gone by 2050. Beyond debunking weight loss strategies, they explain that weight loss is not just about discipline. It's about genetics, access to healthy food, and your relationship to food. Venus flytraps rarely catch flies, despite their name - instead, spiders and ants make up most of their diet. When a victim walk by and brushes against a trigger hair on the inside of the trap’s modified leaves, it sets off an electrical signal. In a typical busy bathroom, women could wait as much as 34 times longer than men. That’s because women take longer - they menstruate, they have more clothes to remove, and they’re more likely to have children or the elderly with them. But it’s also because men’s and women’s bathrooms are often equal in size, which means men have more toilets. For equal wait times, experts say there should be at least three toilets for women for every one toilet for men. Contrary to popular belief, a chrysalis is not a pouch or a sac -It’s actually the caterpillar’s own body! Health officials have reported six deaths and at least 450 cases of lung injury connected to vaping. Patients with vaping-associated lung injury display a wide array of respiratory symptoms, including coughing and chest pain. Doctors still don't know what's behind the surge in vaping-related lung injuries. They suspect it's not nicotine or THC, but other chemicals like vitamin E acetate that might be present in the vape device. People who vape are exposed to other serious health risks, beyond lung injury, doctors say. For example, nicotine, which can be present in high concentrations in e-cigarettes, is linked to brain development issues. Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas as a Category 5 storm on September 1, 2019. More than 24 hours later, it was still there - because it stalled. Hurricanes are carried by large-scale wind patterns, such as the tradewinds, and if those wind patterns dissipate, the hurricane stalls. Hurricanes that stall are more damaging. And they’re becoming more common, which scientists say may be linked to climate change. Ticks are one pest you don’t want to mess with. Once they find a secluded spot on your skin, they use two hook-like structures to tear into your flesh. Then they insert a barbed straw and get to work. If that’s not bad enough, ticks also transmit at least 16 different diseases to humans, such as Lyme. And research suggests that several species of ticks - and the diseases they carry - are now spreading in the US. Although it’s impossible to say exactly what would happen if all insects on Earth suddenly vanished, it’s likely that civilization - if not most ecosystems throughout the planet - would be in serious trouble. Without dung beetles and other poop-eaters, nitrogen-rich feces could build up, choking plant life and preventing anything from growing. Meanwhile, no dermestids and other insects that eat corpses would mean fewer custodians able to clean up dead bodies and recycle those nutrients back into the ecosystem. As of August 20, more than 74,000 fires have been recorded across the Brazil, and many of them are in the Amazon. That’s nearly double the total number of fires in 2018. So, what happened? Environmental groups blame Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, who has indicated that protecting the rainforest is not a priority. They say Bolsonaro has emboldened ranchers and farmers to set fire to forests to acquire more land, now with impunity. Scientists warn that the results may be devastating. They say the Amazon is near a tipping point, beyond which the forest could turn into a dry savannah. UPDATE: We state in the video that the Amazon rainforest supplies as much as 20% of the oxygen we breathe. However, this statistic has been disputed by those in the scientific community and could be less than the 20% figure as previously reported. ------------------------------------------------------ #Amazon #Rainforest #ScienceInsider Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more. Why Climate Change Is Making Your Allergies Worse
Why Climate Change Is Making Your Allergies Worse
8 maanden geleden
When trees, weeds, and grasses want to mate, they release thousands of pollen grains into the air - which can end up in your lungs, eyes, and nose. Special antibodies attach to the grains and summon immune cells to the scene. These release histamine chemicals, which irritate your nose, causing you to sneeze the pollen out. Histamine also causes you to produce more mucus, which helps flush out the grains. Climate change is causing plants to release more pollen, for longer periods of time. So allergies are getting worse than ever. Although we tend to think of death as the end of line for your “self”, your body still has a long way to go. Within a few minutes, your brain and other fuel-guzzling organs will break down, as their cells die and collapse. That night, microbes will eat their way through your gut and escape into the rest of your body -the gases they release are what cause corpses to swell and smell. Although most of your body will probably liquify, thin skin line your eyelids could dry out and mummify, while fatty parts of your body could turn into a soap-like substance called grave wax. Misaligned teeth can put you at risk for tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss. Braces shift teeth by applying pressure, which constricts blood flow to the surrounding tissue that holds those teeth in place. That in turn causes special immune cells called osteoclasts to rush in and dissolve part of the jawbone, creating a space for the tooth to slide over and relieve the pressure. Bright blue fireworks are far more challenging to produce than common colors like red, white, or green. The issue is that the chemical compound that makes that brilliant blue is more fragile that that of other colors, breaking down at high temperatures. So pyrotechnicians are looking for a way to reach high enough temperatures to burst, but not so high that the compound is destroyed. ------------------------------------------------------ #Fireworks #Pyrotechnics #ScienceInsider Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more. More than 180 species of "magic" mushrooms produce the psychoactive compound psilocybin. When you ingest psilocybin, your gut converts it into another chemical called psilocin, which triggers changes in the brain. It increases activity in the visual cortex, leading to changes in perception; it decreases network activity in the "Default Mode Network," driving the experience of ego loss; and it increases connectivity among different regions of the brain. Researchers believe it's the combination of these effects that makes psilocybin an effective tool for combating depression and addiction, for which research shows support. Why America Has More Tornadoes Than Anywhere Else In The World
Why America Has More Tornadoes Than Anywhere Else In The World
11 maanden geleden
Each year, over 1,200 tornadoes strike American soil. That's more than anywhere else in the world. The reason the US has more tornadoes than anywhere else in the world has to do with the Gulf of Mexico and the Rocky Mountains. Together, these two landmarks create the perfect conditions for making twisters smack in the middle of America. MORE SCIENCE CONTENT: Why Utah Drops Fish Out Of Airplanes Into Their Mountain Lakes nlmind.info/video/km-aqZCJrNuoqco.html What Happens When You Stare At The Sun For Too Long nlmind.info/video/xIqNqIhpuqZllaQ.html Most Extreme Weather On Other Planets nlmind.info/video/mmyMfKaktqJqnJs.html ------------------------------------------------------ #Tornado #Weather #ScienceInsider Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more. It's true. Taken altogether, countries outside the U.S. see around 200-300 twisters annually. Compared to more than 1,200 that strike American soil. So, what makes the US so special? To make a tornado, you need just the right mix of ingredients: Warm, humid air near the ground. Cold air higher up in the atmosphere. And wind that overlaps while moving at different speeds or directions. Believe it or not, few places on Earth check all of these boxes. And none compares to the Great Plains of the United States - AKA, tornado alley. Largely thanks to this: The Gulf of Mexico. Markowski: So the Gulf of Mexico is actually the warmest body of water on earth at its latitude. And when it comes to making tornadoes, the warmer the air, the better. As hot air rises off the Gulf, it crawls north across the Plains. Where it meets air blowing west out of the American Rockies. When the two winds come together, they can create a vortex of wind that spins horizontally. Now, here's where that warm air is key. As it rises - as warm air likes to do - it tilts the tube vertical to form a rotating storm called a supercell. And up to 20% of supercells spawn tornados. Now, you can find these conditions elsewhere in the world. Markowski: Anywhere where you can find warm water that's equatorward of some area that also finds itself downwind of a major mountain chain, tornadoes tend to be an elevated risk. Take Bangladesh, for example. There, warm, humid air spreads from the Bay of Bengal and travels north. Where it overlaps with winds blowing southeast out of the Himalayan Mountains. This produces an average of around six tornadoes each year. Including the world's deadliest. Which killed 1,300 people and injured 12,000 more in 1989. But six tornadoes a year doesn't compare to the 12,000 or so we see in the US. And tornadoes don't just strike the US during tornado season from March through June. In January, for example, We get about 36 tornadoes! That's because you can find those perfect tornado conditions year-round. And over a region several times the size of Bangladesh. That said, tornadoes in the US may not be as common as you think. Markowski: "Most people greatly overestimate how often tornadoes occur in Tornado Alley." "I mean if you watch the movie Twister, it's easy to think that every day at 4 o'clock they sound the alarm and you just go underground, but really most people that live in Oklahoma have never seen a tornado before." That's because even in Oklahoma, the tornado capital of the world, tornadoes only strike the same spot once every 1,200-1,500 years, on average. But if you are unlucky enough to spot one, be sure to keep your distance. Tornado winds can reach a whopping 400 kilometers per hour! Plenty fast enough to sweep you, and everything else off the ground. Why America Has More Tornadoes Than Anywhere Else In The World

Why The 'Game Of Thrones' Dragons Couldn't Fly In Real Life
Why The 'Game Of Thrones' Dragons Couldn't Fly In Real Life
11 maanden geleden
If the dragons in "Game of Thrones" wanted to fly in real life, they’d need to look a lot different than they do on the show. For one, they’d need jacked leg muscles to heave their huge bodies off the ground. Plus, they’d want larger stronger wings in proportion to their body, similar to the wings of a giant pterosaur, a real enormous reptile that flew through the skies during the time of the dinosaurs. ------------------------------------------------------ #GameOfThrones #Dragons #ScienceInsider Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more. We share our sharp canine teeth with lions, hippos, and other mammals. But believe it or not, they have nothing to do with tearing into meat. What if Thanos really had wiped out 50 percent of all life on Earth? To be fair, Thanos has good intentions: To help improve the quality of life for everyone left. But it turns out, ecosystems don’t work that way. Here’s why Thanos’ plan is a terrible idea that would doom all life on Earth. Treatment and antibodies actually work in conjunction. Effective treatment can massively cut down viral load. And it will help our immune cells to work more efficiently and let the B cell to create antibodies more faster.

I see a lot of people saying to throw money at it. Yeah, sure, money is important when it comes to dealing with this pandemic absolutely. However people need to understand that research takes time. In the end it isn't how much money you throw at it but the time it takes to research. I can't stress this shit enough people. This MIGHT slow down during the summer but it will be back come fall and winter. A vaccine, not just a treatment (there is a distinction), will take at the shortest time estimate 18 months. It MIGHT get here sooner but I wouldn't bet on it. To all the people saying this pandemic is overblown I have nothing but genuine animosity for you. I really hope the virus takes you out.

The video of the "only 3 treatment options" is true but never mentions what else all the people/patients can do/should do...then it ends with the researcher telling you/me that the only way to mitigate the spread of this virus is "social distancing and self-quarantining" until their drug and vaccine comes out.....It seems that nobody is taking any responsibility for their own health or for improving their own immune system levels...Could increasing our vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants help and changing to healthier lifestyles help?...All evidence shows that increasing these helps..... Thoughts? Dr.S.

Convalescent plasma therapy is the answer. For some reason this video brushed over it. This was a pretty slick video probably made by a drug company. CPT is a solution that does not involve a drug that they can make money with. They are talking about finding the right antibody and then perhaps with synthetic biology manufacturing a drug which is the antibody. It would be much faster to have people who are recovering donate and administer it the matching recipient. Donors can donate just the plasma, who know how long it takes for a good concentration of antibodies to be produced. Probably longer than a few days. You can donate plasma twice or three times a week but it would take longer for antibodies to be produced. Then using therapeutic apheresis the recipient can exchange plasma, not all of it but enough to give someone a higher concentration of the antibody. It would effect recovery in just hours.

1. vaccines are inherently dangerous; 2. bill gates microchip vaccine dubbed mark of the beast very very dangerous as THATS the END of your freedoms; HCQ n zinc MUCH safer MUCH faster MUCH easier n YOU KEEP YOUR FREEDOMS!! with HCQ you will develop all the antibodies you will ever get just by having the virus itself..plus NO vaccine with guarantee you will never get the virus again as its NOT a natural virus; its a biowarfare weapon despite what officials tell you that its just a natural virus; if it gets widely known that its a biowarefare weapon used on purpose that will spark WW111 thats why officials deny its an engineered biowarfare weapon. avoid the mark take the HCQ n zinc n KEEP your FREEDOMS!

This is not a weather-related or environmental disease it is more like man-made warfare to scare people...the way its spread is weird.....something fishy about this whole thing.....we can't hide from death being isolated doesn't make everybody safe....you go shopping you can catch the disease anyone one of us can be a carrier so this manmade thing virus has a plan election is coming ..respiratory disease can be airborne, droplets...wearing masks s the way to combat the disease.....all these workers wearing a bodysuits looks like they are fighting for a biochemical agent rather a disease......

Hello, DATA REQUEST; Kindly if you have lab, how is this virus behave in bleach at dosage ( 0.8 to 1ppm) as other micro at room temperature? The data i shared with you in my field experience and also recommendation from all biocides and world water treatment starndards for disinfection of water ( we usually take 0.5 to 1 ppm dosage of chlorine daily in the whole world. This dosage is acceptaed as biocide (eg algae, virus, algae ) practicaly with ground experice i know it reduces (kills) algae, moulds ;;;oxidation.....but i have not done practical with virous, thats why i shared it as food for thought. If i have lab i will do the experiment and provide concrete data about it, Thats also my question, as other micro; algae, yiest, moulds, we can controll by these dosage, what of this virus as other micro.... I wish to share this question to people with lab to expose this virous at 20 to 28'c (room temp ) and give us data. is it effective as it does to other micro?
